Not many countries offer the opportunity to be judged by a jury of peers in criminal or civil cases. In the United States, this process is both a privilege and a responsibility—a cornerstone of our judicial system that ensures fairness and community participation. Recently, I received a jury summons, and it reminded me of this duty to serve my community and country, a duty I take pride in fulfilling. It also brought to light the important role employers play in enabling their team members to participate in jury service without undue burden.
This wasn’t my first rodeo! I’ve served on a jury before, and let me tell you—it was fantastic. The experience provided me with insight into the inner workings of our judicial system, introduced me to the dedicated professionals who safeguard it, and gave me the chance to contribute my voice for the greater good. When I received my latest summons, I was genuinely excited to return, though I doubted I’d be lucky enough to serve again. (Spoiler: I wasn’t selected, but more on that in a minute!)
Of course, the reality of being summoned meant my carefully planned calendar was about to go sideways. At home and at work, schedules needed rearranging, and there was the looming possibility of wasted time waiting around. But I was ready to embrace it because this responsibility matters.
When I arrived for jury duty, I was impressed by how the system made the experience as efficient and respectful as possible. The judge welcomed us, acknowledged the inconvenience, and promised to make the best use of our time. The jury commissioner was thorough and informative. Within an hour, I found myself in a courtroom for jury selection.
Although I wasn’t chosen to serve on this case, I followed the trial via live stream. Fun fact: the defendant’s attorney dismissed me quickly during selection—but if he hadn’t, he would have likely snagged a “not guilty” verdict from me. As I am typing this blog, I am waiting on pins and needs for the verdict.
Jury duty isn’t just a civic responsibility for individuals—it’s one for employers, too. By supporting team members in fulfilling this obligation, we contribute to the integrity of the judicial system and demonstrate the value of civic engagement. Here are a few key points employers should keep in mind:
Know Your Financial Legal Obligations. In Colorado, employers are required to pay $50 per day for the first three days of jury service. After that, the court steps in to pay the same amount. If you’re an employer in another state, reach out to us—we’re happy to help you find the specific requirements for your location.
Help Employees Navigate the Process. Employees will need to provide their employer with a juror service certificate form (if the employer chooses to require this document) after completion of jury duty, which they can obtain from the court. This document provides instructions on how to access the official jury certificate online. When a team member is called for the jury, be sure to let them know if you require this document.
Support Self-Employed Individuals. If you’re self-employed, the court provides $50 per day for the first three days of jury service. It’s a good idea to plan ahead to manage any disruptions to your business. The court provides a self-employed juror compensation request for and W-9. You must complete the W-9 with your personal information, not your business information.
Jury duty can feel like an inconvenience, but it’s a vital part of maintaining justice and fairness in our society. As employers, we have a unique opportunity to foster a culture of civic pride and responsibility by encouraging our teams to participate fully and without worry.
Whether it’s rearranging schedules, understanding the legal requirements, or simply showing support for an employee’s civic duty, we play an important role in making this system work. And who knows? Your team member might come back from jury duty inspired, with new insights into how fairness, collaboration, and decision-making work in a high-stakes environment.
Let’s all do our part—because when everyone shows up, justice truly has a chance to shine.
