Recruiting Made Easy for Small Business

Apr 20, 2018

Recruiting can be a very daunting task.  Determining what tasks and roles you need to have filled, marketing and attracting qualified candidates while evaluating the best fit can be extraordinarily painful for managers.  At the bottom of this page, we have created a 5 Step Recruiting Process just for you.  Following this process will make your recruiting endeavors much easier. In addition to the HR Branches 5 Step Recruiting Process, there are a few other tips that we would like to share with you to help you along this journey.

Keep bias (and discrimination) out of the recruiting process. It seems that a lot of people learn a lot about their unnoticed biases during the recruiting process. I once had a manager turn down a very qualified candidate because the candidate worked at a restaurant that they didn’t like. Do not let this get in the way of finding the right person to complement your operations. This can have very large ramifications, including legal issues.

Follow the 80/20 rule. There is no such thing as the perfect candidate who can hit the ground running on the first day. Come to terms with the fact that training will have to take place. When evaluating candidate, find the candidates that have 80% of your requirements and start planning on training towards the 20% skill gap that you must fill.

Know EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity). Employers must provide equal employment opportunities to all applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability or genetics. It is especially helpful to speak with your attorney about EEO and how it applies to you.

Look at behaviors and good cultural fit too. Every business culture is unique. One candidate’s personality may not be the best cultural fit for your business and what you are trying to achieve. Using behavioral assessments (such as, Meyers- Briggs, The Predictive Index, or the DiSC Profile) can be especially helpful. Also, use a behavioral interview technique during interviews.

A well thought out and planned recruiting process will prove the best possible results for your future success and growth. Just keep focused on the skills and qualifications that the position requires.
